The Oyster and the City: Historical Oyster and Downtown Waterfront Tour

November 1, 2019 @ 10:00 am - 12:00 pm

Join NY/NJ Baykeeper and Dr. Tim White for our inaugural Oyster Tour in New York City!

Starting at Pier 16 on the East River, this fascinating tour will chronicle the oyster history of NYC, with emphasis on the downtown district and waterfront! On a walk down to the Staten Island Ferry terminal, the tour will feature oyster history from the days of Native Americans, the Dutch city, and the Early Republic. With stops at Fraunces Tavern, the site of Fort Amsterdam, and views of Governors Island, the tour will also weave together the histories of oyster beds, the Hudson and East rivers, and the restaurants and street peddlers of old New York.

Finishing with a walk through Battery Park City up to Pier 25, this tour will offer a story of the city and its oysters as they moved together through history.
