Baykeeper Duo Honored at Governor’s 2007 Environmental Excellence Awards Ceremony

NY/NJ BAYKEEPER RECEIVES HONORABLE MENTION AWARD AT GOVERNOR’S ENVIRONMENTAL EXCELLENCE AWARDS CEREMONY
KEYPORT, NJ (November 30, 2007) – NY/NJ Baykeeper land conservation director Greg Remaud and oyster program director Meredith Comi were honored last night with an honorable mention award at the Governor’s 2007 Environmental Excellence Awards ceremony for their dedication to making New Jersey a greener place to live and work.
Department of Environmental Protection Commissioner Lisa P. Jackson presented the award in the healthy ecosystems category at the ceremony held at Drumthwacket. The DEP established the New Jersey Environmental Excellence awards program in 2000 to recognize outstanding environmental performance, programs and projects. In 2006, the program was renamed to reflect Governor Corzine’s commitment to environmental protection.
In accepting the award, oyster program director Meredith Comi said “With the DEP’s support through the years, Baykeeper has been able to restore hundreds of thousands of oysters to the Estuary. This award is especially meaningful.”
Baykeeper’s land conservation program works to preserve and restore sites throughout the Hudson Raritan Estuary through acquisition, advocacy, and planning, helping to advance the Estuary's environmental and biological importance as well as its value as a recreational and cultural resource. Baykeeper’s oyster restoration program is at the leading edge of restoring this keystone species to the Hudson-Raritan Estuary, allowing Estuary health to dramatically Improved.
