11/10/2008- I became the Baykeeper in April of this year, upon the retirement of our visionary founder, Andy Willner. While I’m new at the helm, I’m no stranger to the challenges of protecting our waterways. I grew up with the Detroit River literally in my backyard. In the early 20th century Detroit boasted the busiest port in the world, busier even than the ports of New York or London. Of course it paid for that honor with a toxic legacy of industrial pollution not unlike our own Estuary. From an early age, I felt a deep passion for, and commitment to protecting the natural world.
The Baykeeper's mission is to protect, preserve, and restore the ecological integrity and productivity of the Hudson-Raritan Estuary - the most urban estuary on the planet. Since 1989, we have served as citizen advocate for the Estuary's bays, streams, and shores. Baykeeper stops polluters, champions public access, influences land use decisions, and restores habitat - benefiting the natural and human communities of our watershed.

Conservation The Hudson-Raritan Estuary is the most urban estuary on Earth, with only a tiny portion of its open space left undeveloped. Baykeeper works jointly with its many partners to conserve this remaining habitat, our priceless natural heritage.
Advocacy Rivers and bays, egrets and striped bass, can’t speak for themselves. Baykeeper acts as their voice in the Estuary, teaming with other groups and citizens to generate region-wide and watershed-wide policy initiatives...
