NY/NJ Baykeeper hosted a celebratory dinner in May 2015 to thank the leaders and partners who helped acquired properties along the headwaters of Matawan Creek to create a new “Freneau Woods Monmouth County Park,” in Aberdeen Township, NJ.
The Board of Chosen Monmouth County Freeholders, Senator Joseph Kyrillos, the Aberdeen Township Mayor and Council, Fred Rummel, Chair of the Monmouth County Board of Recreation Commissioners, Jim Truncer, Director of Monmouth County Parks, and Bill Kastning on behalf of Monmouth Conservation Foundation were all recognized for this accomplishment and awarded plaques for their leadership.
This project succeeded only because of the steadfast work of these individuals, who had to overcome major legal, timing, and funding obstacles during the past four years. The AWA property, together with adjacent properties purchased by the County and donated by the Township of Aberdeen, will be combined to form a 250-acre park. The land is among the richest ecosystems in the region and will provide open space and recreational opportunities to the residents of northwest Monmouth County.
Had the Freeholders not voted to acquire the cornerstone 92-acre AWA property in February, 250 residential units would have been built along the bluffs of Lake Lefferts at the head of Matawan Creek, and hopes for a regional park would have been lost.
The event took place at the award-winning Drew’s Bayshore Bistro in Keyport. Chef Drew Arreneo used the movie Jaws for inspiration. “Matawan Creek” Mako Shark and warm crabmeat finger sandwiches were among the courses prepared and served by the talented Bistro staff.
