About the Proposed Pipeline Williams Transco has proposed a 23.4-mile pipeline project to expand its existing Transco transmission system to transport natural gas from the Marcellus Shale region through Raritan Bay to New York. If built, the pipeline will disrupt YOUR fishing, boating. and recreational activities! Construction of the pipeline would also disturb habitat for clams, horseshoe crabs, fish, and other marine animals. This is a step backwards for our energy policy and the environment by committing the region to more fossil fuel infrastructure projects that may be unnecessary or make it more difficult for renewables to enter the market. Since 1989, NY/NJ Baykeeper has been protecting, preserving, and restoring the NY-NJ Harbor Estuary.
Through your efforts, NY/NJ Baykeeper has sued polluters for clean water violations, protected citizen’s right to access the waterfront, patrolled the waterways with our own boat investigating potential pollution violations and oil spills, restored over 2,700 acres of natural land around the densely developed urban Estuary, severed as a watchdog for our state’s parks and open spaces, managed two scientific oyster reefs and one community reef for research and shellfish restoration planting over 2.8 million oysters and actively developing restoration techniques specific to urban waters, and made a significant positive impact on habitats and communities within the Estuary region.
