Job Title: Communications Director

Organization:

NY/NJ Baykeeper, founded in 1989 and located in Matawan, New Jersey, is a bi-state environmental non-profit organization whose mission is to protect, preserve, and restore the NY-NJ Harbor Estuary.

Position:

Reporting to the Chief Operating Officer, the full-time salaried Communications Director will set and guide strategy for all communications, media, website, social media, and collateral to consistently articulate NY/NJ Baykeeper’s mission.

Responsibilities:

  • Develop, implement, and evaluate annual media, communications, and public relations strategies.
  • Act as the formal spokesperson and media liaison for NY/NJ Baykeeper.
  • Proactively pitch events and stories to appropriate media and outlets.
  • Write news releases, background pieces, advisories, newsletters, fact sheets, Op-Eds, mass emails, blog posts, and other news-related information.
  • Respond to inquiries from print, radio, and television journalists.
  • Manage all media contacts, build press lists, and manage press database of national and regional reporters.
  • Provide advice on the effect the organization’s actions and activities have in the media.
  • Administer NY/NJ Baykeeper’s social media presence, including integration of social media into NY/NJ Baykeeper programs and online engagement; recruiting and cultivating followers; updating and maintaining social media networking profiles.
  • Maintain and develop content for website ensuring that new and consistent information is regularly posted.
  • Track and measure the level of engagement over time; lead user testing and audience analysis to gain insights into our core demographic.
  • Manage the development, distribution, and maintenance of all print and electronic collateral.
  • Maintain detailed knowledge of NY/NJ Baykeeper’s program and development operations, and current legislative and non-legislative issues that may affect the organization.
  • Evaluate current events and media reports in the Estuary and the nation for their impact on the organization.
  • Effectively communicate NY/NJ Baykeeper’s mission and programs at formal and informal meetings.
  • Coordinate the work of communications interns or fellows.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • A bachelor degree in related field or a minimum of three years performing pro-active media outreach;
  • Excellent verbal communications skills;
  • Demonstrated superior writing skills including experience writing Op-Eds, press releases, fact sheets, and other media related materials;
  • Understanding of basic principles of graphic design and ability to create simple graphics for social media;
  • Proficiency in Internet-based research, word processing, and e-mail programs;
  • Experience with social media platforms including Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter;
  • Flexibility to travel as required in the performance of duties, a valid driver’s license, and reliable transportation;
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule including some night and weekend events;
  • Sincere commitment to work collaboratively with staff, board members, volunteers, donors, and other supporters;
  • Self-starter, able to work independently, and enjoys creating and implementing new initiatives.
